Voices4Change shall, as a vibrant platform for culture and media activism, contribute to free and inclusive societies, locally and globally.
- Cultural activism is understood as creative and artistic expression in the form of for example performing arts such as music and theatre, literature and visual arts that give rise to critical reflections and engagement; generate debate and challenge political agendas.
- Media activism is understood as activism that uses media and communication technologies for social and political movements.
- Free society means a society in which the political and civil rights are protected, respected and fulfilled.
- Inclusive society means a society for all in which every individual, each with rights and responsibilities, has an active role to play. Members of diverse ethnic, religious or social groups coexist on equal terms and diversity is embraced.
As a platform V4C:
- Capacitates social movements, activist groups and artists by providing training, exchange and learning opportunities.
- Raises awareness of burning issues by facilitating online and offline debates and conversations.
- Administrates digital platforms for advocacy, communication and funding opportunities.
- Enables culture and media activism by managing and supporting actions carried out by V4C alone or in collaboration with others.
The trend of governments closing down the democratic space has been gradually intensifying for just over a decade. Civil society restrictions are increasingly evident in countries across the world, from highly repressive autocracies through to established democracies. The closing space is part of a general authoritarian pushback against democracy. At the same time, racism and xenophobia are on the rise worldwide, putting the lives of tens of thousands of refugees fleeing war and persecution at risk. In a world of division and conflict, the necessity of finding ways of connecting as humans and collaboratively working towards an inclusive, fair and peaceful coexistence is greater than ever. Culture, arts, new and old media are means to connect emotions and communicate to people, together they build a strong foundation to find common grounds beyond individual identities and cultural differences.
We want freedom
A free society means a society in which all people are enjoying their civil and political freedoms and freedom from fear.
The right to hold an opinion and express it orally, in writing or in visual form is one of the most fundamental freedoms and human rights. However, people’s right to partake in culture and freely express themselves artistically is violated in many part of the world. A diverse and dynamic cultural life is a central element in an independent civil society. Art and culture give rise to critical reflections and engagement and are important part of the development of democratic and inclusive societies. Art and culture can help create positive change, while at the same time a rich artistic and cultural life has value in itself.
Democracy requires the active participation of citizens. Ideally, the media should keep citizens engaged in the business of governance by informing, educating and mobilising the public. Independent journalists and media activists play important roles as watchdogs, guardian of the public interest, and for creating forums for public discussions and debate. Alternative media is effective for promotion grassroots democracy by airing local issues, providing an alternative source of information to official channels and reflecting ethnic and linguistic diversity. Apart from alternative media, Voices4Change seeks to enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communication technology for social change.
We want inclusiveness
An inclusive society is a society for all in which every individual, each with rights and responsibilities, has an active role to play. Such society is based on respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms, cultural and religious diversity, social justice, democratic and social participation and the rule of law. It is promoted by social policies that seek to reduce inequality and create flexible and tolerant societies that embrace all people. A prerequisite for the materialisation of inclusive societies is the conviction that societies and cultures are dynamic, interactive and transformative, and the embracement of diversity.
Voices4Change promotes equal rights and opportunities for all people regardless of colour, gender, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation or age. V4C contributes to creating conditions enabling full and active participation of all members of society.
